VINYL VALIDATION DECALS

The first vinyl decals were issued in 1971 with a 1972 expiration date, to be placed on the REAR 1971 Michigan license plate. The front 1971 Michigan license plate DID NOT get a validation decal, nor did any of the succeeding years receive more than one vinyl validation decal. The numbers along the side or bottom of the validation decals were an Internal Control Number for the Secretary of State and denoted nothing about the license plate or vehicle that the validation decal was assigned to. NOTE: Some employees of the Secretary of State had a habit or writing this Internal Control number on the copies of the printed registration forms.

ODD FULL YEAR VALIDATION DECALS

Over the years, from 1980 to 1998, many variations or ODD validation decals have turned up. Discussions with other collectors has not cleared up this mystery, but the consensus is that they were probably used on non-commercial types of registrations. Below are the known ODD variations.

During the 1998 expiration year, the separate MONTH and YEAR validation decals were merged into one, and the separate MONTH validation decals became a thing of the past. Therefore, during the 1998 expiration year, at least three (3) different validation expiration decals were issued, the one above, with the YEAR only, and the two (2) shown below, one WITHOUT the license plate number shown on it, and the other WITH the license plate number shown on it. Because some people renewed their license plates for 18 months to 24 months, some YEAR ONLY validation decals with "99" on them were also issued (see below) Also beginning in 1998, in place of the Internal Control Number on the validation decals, the Secretary of State began placing a "code" at the bottom of the validation decal. This code consisted of a 7 character numeric/alpha/numeric string, with the first three numbers denoting the Secretary of State Office issuing the validation decal, the LETTER denoting the year of issue, and the last three numbers denoting the day and month of issue, using the Julian Calendar.

SCHOOL BUS VINYL VALIDATION DECAL

This vinyl validation decal was given to me by MLPCA member #67, Wilbur Randall. He related that this validation decal, along with some other decals, were part of a collection of license plates that he purchased from the late MLPCA member Dick Wiley.

On the envelope that contained this validation decal and others, was a notation, written in by Dick Wiley, that this 1981 expiration validation decal with the "Dec 31" across the bottom of the decal, was to be used to validate a "SCHOOL BUS" license plate for the year 1981.

As the FIRST Michigan "School Bus" license plates, those with the designation "School Bus" on them, were not issued until 1976, on the Red, White and Blue Bicentennial base, it is believed that this validation decal would have been used during the calendar year of 1981.

The 1976 base "School Bus" license plate was used until the new white on blue base was issued in 1984, although it's possible that there could be "School Bus" issues on the white on black 1979 base issue, which was used until 1983. In that case, the 1981 validation decal, with the :Dec 31" date on it would have been used on either the Red, White and Blue 1976 base, or the 1979 white on black base.

As it is, the 1976 Red, White and Blue base "School Bus" license plate was used until the issuance of the "Blue Bar" base plate in 2007, and in some cases, is still being used in some areas as late as January 2010.

At some point in time, believed to be approximately 2000, the State of Michigan combined the FARM and LOG validation decals into one decal with both LOG & FARM on the decal (see example below).
