Here Are The Boys From The 4th Platoon of Company "C"

It's been nearly 49 years now, I wonder how many are still around.

That's me, 3rd from left, standing, the little skinny guy, who turned 18 years old during basic training.

We had a group of guys from Arkansas, I seem to recall that they were from a National Guard or Reserve Unit, and their leader was the guy on the far left end standing, Don Wray, from Des Arc, Arkansas.   Everyone called him "Buddy".

They had a guy from this unit, he's in the picture, I won't say who, that this was his 6th or 7th time trying to make it through basic.  Back then you just didn't say "I quit" and go home.   You had to finish Basic Training.

Anyway, the guys from this Arkansas Unit were suppose to see that this fellow made it through "this time".  No...... he didn't make it, again !!!!!  And not from a lack of trying on the other fellows part.  They had nightly "blanket parties" with this fellow, to no avail.

We also had a large group of guys from the Detroit area, and another large group of guys from Pennsylvania, as well as some guys from Buffalo and New York City.  There was also a large group from Washington, D. C., and others from Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.  

We were "4th Platoon", and you'll note that the last names were alphabetically from the letter "S" to the letter "Z".  That's the way you got assigned to a "Platoon", alphabetically. 

Our Battalion/Training Unit had four (4) Platoons, "1st", "2nd", "3rd" and "4th".   My buddy Ronnie Kea, we joined on the "Buddy Plan", was in "2nd Platoon", as his last name fell into that Platoon.    He doesn't remember.  I think he'd rather forget his Basic Training days.   We still talk on the telephone at least weekly.
